PAX 10: Donkey Kong Country Returns is on the right trackPosted on Monday September 6th, 2010 at 12:12pm by Destructoid
It was super weird going from Kirby's Epic Yarn to Donkey Kong Country Returns at Nintendo's PAX Prime booth. While both titles can sort of be viewed as reboots of their respective franchises, the contrast in difficulty and approach is startling. With Kirby's Epic Yarn, you are getting simpler controls -- think New Super Mario Bros. Wii -- and what has to be the least-punishing difficulty in recent memory. With DKC Returns, you're getting a swift kick to the backside. It was certainly the hardest (but never unfair) game I played at PAX. That was the first mental notch I scratched out on my list of must-haves. As a long-time fan of the series, I'm no longer worried about what Retro Studios is doing with Donkey Kong Country Returns. Alongside many of you, I was cautiously optimistic during the game's unveiling at E3. You see, I play Donkey Kong Country 2 to completion on a near-monthly basis. Yeah. I'm one of those. For someone like me, there's a lot that can go wrong with DKC Returns. Stuff that most players likely won't even pick up on or care about; that's perfectly fine. For us veterans, we have an idea -- based off of the original three Super Nintendo games -- what this series should be.
There's more, but my brain is struggling after a week of non-stop excitement at the convention. Based on what I played and saw of DKC Returns, I think Retro Studios is on the right track here.
Talking with the Nintendo rep responsible for looking over this demonstration, I got the feeling that they -- Nintendo and Retro -- realize what made the SNES titles so beloved, and how to adapt those ideas into a Wii game for 2010. We genuinely reminisced about the golden days of platformers, and openly professed our love for the genre. Bless your heart for employing these fine people, Nintendo. Then there's the new stuff: being able to jump between the foreground and background, simultaneous two-person co-op play, mechanics like ground slams and Diddy Kong's jetpack, etc. While all of those bullet points are things I want, it'd be silly to go after those and nothing else. We have the classic games to go back to at any time, after all. The only thing I didn't enjoy about DKC Returns was the startling lack of kremlings. Perhaps it's best that not everything remain the same, though. Perhaps not. Also, I can't help but think Rare has those characters on lockdown in some dust-covered vault. Whatever -- November 21 is going to be a day for Wii owners to remember; I'm positive of this. PAX 10: Day 2 wrap up with Sterling and HolmesPosted on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at 10:10pm by Destructoid

At different times throughout the day, I spotted him signing autographs, harassing strangers on the phone at the request of fans, and of course, playing videogames. I was lucky enough to bump into him as we were both heading out of the PAX convention center. He obliged my request for assistance in wrapping up the day's events. For that, I am grateful. Besides giving you an overview of some of the more notable games we played today, this video shows some of the size and scale of PAX as a whole. It also serves a nice snapshot of some of the special folks that you might run into while perusing the show. They aren't like people that you'll meet anywhere else, gaming event or otherwise. I think Jim said it best when he remarked that "E3 is like a pageant, and PAX is like a circus. At E3, they are all following the same script. At PAX, there is no script, and everyone is completely insane." OK, I might have made up some of that up, but I'm pretty sure he said most of the rest. Wanna star in a Wii Party commercial?Posted on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at 8:08pm by Destructoid
Are you a cam whore? Do you love the Wii? I mean reeeeeeeally love the Wii enough to prance around like Goofus McGee and have your antics broadcast around the country? Then maybe you have what it takes to star in an upcoming Wii Party commercial! Nintendo has set up an online casting call open to US residents over the age of 13 to find fresh faces for its latest expanded audience ad campaign. From now until September 10, you can go to the page and fill out a short form with seemingly nonessential questions like "What's your favorite food?" or "Do you play an instrument?" Lord only knows what the Nintendo marketing gurus have in store for you. Wouldn't it be awesome if one of us got the gig? Between fame and dignity, I know what I'd pick! PAX 10: Jimpressions of Kirby's Epic YarnPosted on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at 8:08pm by Destructoid
After what has felt like an eternity of waiting, I have finally gotten my hands on Kirby's Epic Yarn during PAX Prime. Both myself and the esteemed Jonathan Holmes took on the roles of Kirby and Prince Fluff for some co-op patchwork antics. So, here's the burning question -- has Nintendo just been stringing us along? The answer, from what I have played, is no. Kirby's Epic Yarn is an absolute delight. It's not a challenging game (losing points rather than dying is the penalty for getting hit by enemies) but it's a game that just makes you grin from ear to ear. The co-op works surprisingly well, with Kirby and Fluff throwing each other around the screen and even combining to form ludicrous gestalt tanks that fire rockets and big fists. One thing that I really must emphasize is just how gorgeous this game looks. I'm not even going to say it looks good "for a Wii game." It looks good, period. The wonderfully bouncy animations, the effects of the scenery being ruffled and pulled, and the beautiful bright colors make this a complete visual treat. This game is simply lovely. Fun and varied gameplay, adorable characters, and surprisingly appealing graphics makes this a definite Nintendo game to watch. I have a feeling it's going to make gamers of all ages smile. Nintendo brings crazy water puzzle thing to WiiWarePosted on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at 7:07pm by DestructoidJust this morning, I told you guys about an insane-looking 3D WiiWare puzzler by Nintendo. Now I hear about Fluidity, another Nintendo-published puzzler. Nintendo be stepping up its WiiWare game! You tilt the world to pool together water droplets, and you transform the water into its three states -- solid, liquid, and gas -- to solve numerous puzzles. From the video, levels can get pretty hairy with ramps, magnets, lava pits, pressure switches, and springs strewn about. Also, unless I'm mistaken, I think I spotted a Jiggy. There doesn't seem to be a release date pinned down, but PAX attendees can sample the game for themselves on the show floor. First Fluidity Video and Screenshots Released [Nintendo Life] Sonic Colors co-op has the potential for dickeryPosted on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at 4:04am by Destructoid
It's no rumor -- there is two-player co-op in Sonic Colors. The way it's presented ain't too shabby. See, you aren't actually playing as Sonic or one of his furry friends. Instead, you assume control of robotic Sonic copies racing through Eggman-designed simulations, sort of like test runs to see if his devious traps are enough or if he needs to return to the drawing board. Doesn't that just tickle you? These levels, which are unlocked by collecting secret rings in the main game, offer all the same speed and thrills as the single-player mode with the addition of obstacles requiring teamwork to overcome. You can combine powers, like the drill and laser, to create a souped-up amalgamation, then afterward you can screw each other over as you try to reach the goal first. Reminds me of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Could be fun, could be frustrating. We'll know for sure soon. Nintendo brings crazy 3D puzzle thing to WiiWarePosted on Saturday September 4th, 2010 at 1:01am by DestructoidRemember that Japanese Tetris video, where contestants have to contort their bodies to safely pass though gaps on fast-approaching walls? Well, this upcoming WiiWare game by Nintendo and KeysFactory looks a lot like that. Surinuke Anatousu, which means "going through holes," has you flipping an assortment of shapes (called "katamari," I kid you not) in 3D space and squeezing through holes to reach the end of each level before time expires. You can perform tricks by drawing silhouettes with your pieces to fill in an entire hole or earn bonus points by picking up gems along the way. It's nuts, it's lovely, and it looks hella fun. The game drops on September 7th for 800 Points in Japan, but I'm sure it'll pop up in the West sooner or later. Nintendo's New 3D Puzzler [Andriasang] Namco bringing a classic 'Megamix' to Wii this NovemberPosted on Friday September 3rd, 2010 at 5:05pm by Destructoid
Because you can't get enough collections of Namco Bandai classics, the publisher has announced another one -- Namco Museum Megamix for Wii. The disc will feature 18 arcade ports, along with six "remixes" versions of games that feature 3D updates and Wii motion controls. In it, Mickey finds himself trapped by the Mad Doctor, where he encounters an old foe -- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. You can see the first half of the intro here. Epic Mickey is out this holiday, and you'll probably want to spend some extra cash to get the "epic" collector's edition. Full Power Gig setlist plays favoritesPosted on Friday September 3rd, 2010 at 11:11am by Destructoid
Seven45 Studios has revealed the full soundtrack for its upcoming music title, Power Gig: Rise of the Six String, and I hope you like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band, and Kid Rock. How do you think Power Gig's selections compare to the Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and Rock Band 3 tracks?
Rock Band DLC: Uh... Snoop Dogg?!Posted on Friday September 3rd, 2010 at 10:10am by Destructoid
It's an actual thing that is actually happening -- Snoop Dogg's music is coming to Rock Band next week.
Tracks are $1.99/160 MS Points/200 Wii Points per track, or $13.49/1080 MS Points for the full "Snoop Dogg Pack 01." Here's what it gets confusing, so takes notes… The individual tracks will be available for download on all platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii) next week as individual song downloads; you'll only be able to get it as a pack next week on the Xbox 360. Oh, and "That's Tha Homie" won't be available for download on the PS3 until September 14 in North America, and September 15 in Europe. On September 21 in North America and September 22 in Europe, the entire "Snoop Dogg Pack 01" will be available for download on the PlayStation 3. No DLC for GoldenEye 007Posted on Friday September 3rd, 2010 at 5:05am by Destructoid
After having it bluntly confirmed that GoldenEye 007 would indeed have no DLC whatsoever, I struggled with whether or not to top this story off with our intrepid hero, Captain Obvious. On the one hand games on the Wii just don't get DLC, but on the other it isn't impossible for them to get it and that means there's always that chance. Thus putting Captain Obvious up there is basically saying that a Wii game not having DLC is a foregone conclusion, which is saddening. However, since this story basically backs up that conclusion we have Captain Obvious above and the short response I got from Julian Widdows, Executive Producer at Activison Blizzard UK, when I asked him what the chances were, if any, of GoldenEye 007 getting DLC right here: "None. Sorry." Sad to hear it, but considering the fact that I played the original (and still do on occasion) over and over with the exact same levels and no idea what DLC meant (Double Large Cranberry?) I think I'm going to be just fine without it this time around too. Anyone surprised by this? GoldenEye 007 gets a slew of pre-order itemsPosted on Friday September 3rd, 2010 at 12:12am by Destructoid
Because it heard how much you love them, Activision has announced a slew of retailer-specific pre-orders for its upcoming GoldenEye 007 game for the Wii. Activision says the above codes are "exclusive" to each retailer until the end of the year, at which point... I don't know what happens. Maybe they lift an embargo on the entire Internet and folks on GameFAQ and other message boards can finally tell us the codes. Conduit 2 delayed until 2011, getting new control optionsPosted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 9:09pm by Destructoid
Bad news for Wii owners and first-person shooter fans -- High Voltage's sequel Conduit 2 has been pushed out of this year and in to 2011. The game will now see release in the first quarter of next year. Best Buy rewards their Gamers Club with ringtones?Posted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 8:08pm by Destructoid
Nintendo of America went and tweeted last night that if you are a member of Best Buy's Reward Zone Gamers Club (dang, that's a mouthful) you can get some (three, actually) Metroid: Other M ring tones with your purchase of the game. So how about it? Is it worth taking advantage of this AMAZING offer? Actually, it's not too bad of an offer if you know what the entire package is. Joining the gamer's club gets you $10 for every $150 you spend on games (plus gaming accessories), and bonus points to your Reward Zone (for games that qualify). If you don't really care about where you get games in general, I suppose this could be a sw33t deal (that I personally won't be taking). [Image] A look at Guitar Hero's crazy Warriors of RockPosted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 8:08pm by Destructoid

Despite what some people say about the series, I think it looks interesting. Of course, I love heavy metal and think this sort of stuff is hilarious, but that's just me. The art assets are all one shots containing before and after shots of the transformations focused on in the new game. Besides that, also contained were images of the loading screens featuring each characters metamorphasis. The idea here has to do with the characters transforming into all new, more powerful versions of their looks from previous games. Each character is shown off with all their complexities readily visible. There was the punk rocker girl becomes all angelic with some gigantic boots. This other face painted guy turns into boar warrior with an axe guitar. I liked that. Guy with a mohawk flips into this green spiked monster, I found that particularly prickly design fascinating. Trials HD dev announce new WiiWare game MotoHerozPosted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 7:07pm by Destructoid
RedLynx announced today their latest project, MotoHeroz for the Nintendo WiiWare service. This downloadable racing game featuring three major gameplay options, a single player adventure, four-player local multiplayer, and the daily online competition. In the online mode a new tracks open daily to let you compete on leaderboards. It says that physics are a major factor in the gameplay too. Pretty much exactly what too expect from these guys. MotoHeroz is slated to be finished around the end of this year or in early 2011. I'm sort of excited for this. Trials HD had some fantastic physics gameplay, and the leaderboard friends list competition could quickly get fairly fierce. I liked that, and am anxious to try out this game. How do the rest of you guys feel about MotoHeroz? Capcom wants Resident Evil 6 out soon, so do wePosted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 2:02pm by Destructoid
It's been a little over a year since Resident Evil 5 was first released. Can we get another Resident Evil already? Damn, Capcom… what is the hold up here?!?! Jam City Rollergirl game to make debut at PAXPosted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 10:10am by Destructoid
If you're at PAX Prime this week, you'll have the chance to get the first look at developer Frozen Codebase's next title. It's called Jam City Rollergirls, it's a WiiWare title, and it's exactly what you think it is -- a roller derby videogame. Of course RZA's in DJ Hero 2Posted on Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at 9:09am by Destructoid
This was a given considering RZA has a Twitter account and likes to talk, but today it's been confirmed that the producer-rapper will appear as an in-game character in the upcoming DJ Hero 2. He's the final character announced for the music game, which also features Deadmau5, David Guetta, DJ Qbert, and Tiesto.
